Richard Avedon

Another one of my favourite photographers. His portraits are, whoever the portrayed person is; celebrities or everyday people, shot with a neutral background. This enhances the expression of the photographed person hugely. It also makes the photographs timeless. The body language is emphasized by showing part of the torso. It gives the pictures and the depicted people an unconstrained appearance. Also, it creates a distance between the image and the public; viewing is not intimidating because of the nearness of the subject. The spectator gets a ‘private session’ looking at the picture.

His fashion photographs are much more defined by movement. The action of the body, the dynamic of lines, an exciting play of light and dark characterize them.
Black and white photography is more compelling than colour the way he practices it.
